District attorneys in Colorado are weighing their options after Boulder County became the first in the state to drop pending marijuana possession cases in the wake of a public vote to legalize the drug.? Routt County District Attorney Brett Barkey met with senior staff members yesterday to decide whether to proceed with prosecuting petty marijuana cases that are pending in the courts.? Barkey will not be dropping any cases.? Grand Junction Police Department officers have already been told to stop issuing ounce-or-less marijuana tickets.? One of the lead opponents to the marijuana measure was Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck.? Buck announced yesterday that his office would not drop possession cases, citing obligation to the law and helping addicts find treatment.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials are asking for the public?s help in identifying the person or persons responsible for killing a cow moose and her two calves in an empty lot within Mountain Shadows Estates, a subdivision located on County Road 6421 between Granby and Grand Lake.? On Wednesday, between 8 and 10 in the morning, a witness hunting near the subdivision reported to wildlife officials that he heard several shots fired in rapid succession. Upon investigating, the witness says he found the cow and a calf dead, the other calf dying, and that no one immediately approached the carcasses to claim responsibility.? Anyone with information can call Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Hot Sulphur Springs at 970-725-6200, or Operation Game Thief at 877-265-6648 if they wish to remain anonymous.? OGT is offering a $2500 reward for information that leads to the suspect. Officials from Safari Club International have offered to match this amount, bringing the current reward to $5000.

Habitat for Humanity Routt County is observing America Recycles Day today. Volunteers from Steamboat High School will finish up the second of two sheds they have been building for a home, and using leftover recycled siding and trim from the construction of a duplex. Other volunteers are canvassing neighborhoods and businesses, promoting Cars for Homes and encouraging recycling and donating to Habitat for Humanity Routt County. The current duplex construction, which is nearing the end stages, is being funded in part through proceeds from vehicles donated to Habitat for Humanity?s Cars for Homes program, a national vehicle donation program, which provides donors with a quick and easy process for donating cars, trucks, boats, RVs and other vehicles (working or not) to help build decent, affordable shelter in local communities.? A large portion of the Spring Creek Trail has been closed to public access as part of the annual seasonal wildlife closure that begins on November 15th each year. The trail will remain closed until April 15th. The closure begins about one and a half miles up the trail from Amethyst Drive, where the two track road changes to a single track trail, and extends to the top of the trail at the Dry Lake Parking Lot. Access to the closed section of trail is blocked by a gate and a sign is posted with the dates and information about this closure.? The annual seasonal closure is done in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to provide winter habitat for the local elk herd. Illegal trespass into the closed area can put additional stress on the animals in the hard winter months.

Income inequality is increasing across the country and Colorado is no exception. According to the Colorado Center on Law and Policy, the income gap in Colorado widened dramatically in the late 1990s and the mid-2000s, ranking Colorado 8th for the fastest growing income disparity across the United States.? The information was highlighted in a new study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Economic Policy Institute.? The report finds that low- and moderate-income Colorado families did not share in the most recent economic expansion. The incomes of the richest fifth of households grew by 14 percent while those of the poorest fifth fell by 12 percent from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s.? Nationwide, incomes fell by close to 6 percent among the bottom fifth of households, on average, while rising by 8.6 percent among the top fifth, during this period.

The City of Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department is looking for friendly, outgoing volunteers to serve as Nordic Ambassadors at the Howelsen Hill Ski Area. The Ambassadors are needed to educate Nordic trail users about appropriate use of the facility. Volunteers must successfully complete a City application and background check process.
