Tunisian president arrives in Libya for state visit

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki arrived in Tripoli on Monday for his first visit abroad since being sworn in as head of state in mid-December, an AFP photographer reported.

Marzouki, who won elections held in the wake of the toppling of his predecessor Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, was welcomed at Tripoli's international airport by Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the head of Libya's National Transitional Council.

During his visit he will hold talks with Abdel Jalil, Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Rahim al-Kib and other senior officials of the North African country, officials said.

Ben Ali was toppled last January in a popular uprising triggered by the self-immolation of a Tunisian vegetable vendor.

His ouster triggered the Arab Spring movement which has also seen the fall of Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak and the killing of Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi, while also paving the way for the removal of Yemeni President Abdullah Saleh and rocking the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
