Though it technically didn?t finish the season with a perfect record, First Southern Baptist won every game it played, including the final two against Church of Christ Saturday night to win the Augusta Church League softball tournament championship.
First Southern Baptist had to forfeit a game Saturday morning against Church of Christ, which meant it was put in the loser?s bracket. But the team still ran the table by winning three straight games, beating First Baptist 22-4 and Church of Christ 17-7 and 15-8.
In the first championship game, CoC took an early 3-2 lead after the first inning. Taylor Reichard turned a 6-4-3 double play in the second to get FSB?out of another jam. With the help of an error, Darren Po hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to give CoC a 7-6 lead.
Back came FSB?in the bottom of the third. Traci Payne, who had a tremendous hitting day, scored on a double by Reichard. Trevor Holmes knocked in a run with an RBI single. Mike Lewis later crushed a two-run home run over the left-center field fence to give FSB?an 11-7 lead.?
Nick Huelskamp hit a lead-off solo home run in the fourth, Heath Train added a triple, Andy Hall had an RBI single and FSB scored six more for the 17-7 lead, where the game finished.
In the rubber match, CoC couldn?t get much offense going until the third inning. Derek Alley smacked an RBI triple, then later scored for the team?s first two runs to cut FSB?s lead to 5-2.?
But FSB put up a six-spot in the bottom of the inning, then added four more in the next two innings. Train had a triple and an RBI single and Reichard and Holmes both added an RBI single.
CoC tried to keep their hopes alive with a six-spot of its own in the fifth. The team had four straight RBI base hits. But CoC couldn?t score in the sixth as FSB won 15-8.
CoC still had a successful season, finishing second in the league standings.?

- ? There will be a fall league for anyone interested in playing softball. The cost is $250 per team and requires at least three women to be members of the team. Anyone interested may call Amanda Garcia at 734-8015 or Marshall Manahan at 299-3193.
There also may be a women?s league if there?s enough interest. Moving forward, a sand volleyball league also may be in the works to help provide competition for adults in Augusta.
